Month in Review: November 2008

Series of changes happened after the Pistons’ championship run during the 2003-2004 season. As the years went by since then, I observed that the energy and passion the team had slowly declined. Changes are inevitable, as promised by Dumars after their unfortunate exit last season.
Early November, Detroit Pistons traded Billups and McDyess for Iversion. The first thing that came to my mind is that they completely lost their identity – defense-minded and team-oriented individuals. It’s evident during the first 10 games after that trade. The Pistons are 5-5. It’s still early, but they need to make this trade work, fast. I’m not sure what exactly Dumars plans are, but I just hope these guys get another crack championship, and win it all the way.
For AI, welcome to the team. As for Billups, I wish you all the best. Hope to see you and Melo in the Finals.

Despite the financial turmoil that hit everybody world-wide, I’m still active as an agent of Sun Life. I’ve closed two applications this November and hope to close more deals. If you want to know more information, just read my post here.

This is the online community of what I personally call as ‘Filipino finance enthusiasts’. I’ve been reading forum posts in this site for months now, but just got serious last month. There are lots of information and knowledge that I got, and it’s only a matter of taking actions before I get to where I want to go. For those whose goal is financial independence, better visit this site and be active in the forums.

I’ve been doing lots of reading about making money online, and came across these two websites. Carl Ocab has been published numerous times in local newspapers, that’s why his known. I’ve learned about John Chow while surfing the internet. I find his e-book very helpful. Both blogs provided good tips on online money-making activities. Now, I’m making steps to do the same. Kudos to the two of you!

I’ve read several articles about Twilight and got different feedback from those who’ve seen it. It was claimed to be the best book series after the Harry Potter series. So Camille and I decided to watch it ourselves. Nobody liked it better than Camille who’s always fascinated with vampires. In this film, a new insight was created against the typical blood-craving, neck-biting, immortal creatures. There’s a new breed of vampires – the vegetarians – who chose to hunt for animals instead of human.
Generally, we liked the film, so we did some research on the cast and found at that Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is the girl in the film ‘The Messengers’, while the more familiar Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), is actually Cedric Diggory in the Harry Potter movies! I was trying to play with Pattinson’s roles. Is Cedric Diggory really dead? The answer? He’s not! He just turned into a vampire. Hehe. I wonder if Voldemort even knew it.
Kidding aside, I find the movie fantastic and would like to see a sequel. My verdict: 9/10!

My brother Ron celebrated his 16th birthday. Only a few months left before he enters college. He took entrance exams in Saint Louis University (my alma mater) and chose Information Technology (my course) as his first choice and engineering as alternative. I guess I might have inspired him a bit, huh?

Prior to acquiring a domain, Camille and I unofficially blogged on different personal sites. Everything’s changed when our friend Thea introduced us to blogging, giving us tips and encouraging us to write and publish our work. To Thea, thank you!

I’ve wanted to have a DSLR for more than a year now, and am planning to purchase one next year. But my ever charming and sweet girlfriend Camille agreed to buy one this November as advanced Christmas present. Right now, I’m engaged in learning different photography techniques. I’ll post some of my pictures soon. Again, thanks mille!

Camsdcute’s Lair is Camille’s official blog. She’s been using the moniker ‘camsdcute’ for more than 10 years now. She writes anything about anything (got it? good!). We help each other in designing and maintaining our sites. Her site was created months earlier that mine.
Honestly, besides the sites I’ve listed previously in this list, she gave more inspiration to me. This led to the #1 in my list.

Tada! Of course I’m #1 in my list. I write about topics on technology, financial wellness, sports, blogging, photography, and may others. This site is still young, so please expect lots of changes as I’m still working on designs and content.
Watch out for more!

I Hated Life Insurance Until…
A lot of us have experienced talking to insurance agents. Most of these experiences are forgettable, since the common perception regarding insurance is a bit negative. Some say it’s just a waste of money. Others say it’s useless. However, a number of us understand its value. What could be the difference between the two points of view? I can discuss this based on my experience.
I am not totally in favour of life insurance ever since I started working. I got numerous calls from agents representing different companies trying to set appointments to explain their products. The moment they tell me their company, I always say ‘no’. My mindset is fixed. I do not need insurance. It’s morbid to talk about my own death at this early stage of my life. I will just buy when I grow older. My girlfriend has the same outlook. She even asks why get an insurance when you’ve already got an insurance in your company?
All of these changed when we attended a Financial Wellness Talk in our company. The speaker mentioned that before you even invest, life insurance should come first. This is what most of financially independent people do. They value the concept of protection, both for their lives and their wealth. Life insurance can be considered a need for those who have dependents, or at least for those who plan to have a family in the future. The earlier you start the better since the price tends to be cheaper when you are younger. But then again, the needs differ based on a person’s situation – financially, physically etc.

Having the ideas we got from the seminar, we explored some investment vehicles. We tried stocks, mutual funds, time deposits and even 5-6! But somewhat, we felt something was missing. What if something happens to us in the future, especially when we have kids? Just thinking of that situation made us restless. We did further research and came across a product generally called a Variable Universal Life Insurance (VUL). It’s an insurance + investment type of life insurance. The investment portion could generate funds for us at a later stage in our lives. This can be used as a retirement package, an educational plan, or a business capital in the long-term future since we plan to grow the funds for 15 or more years. This perfectly fits our requirements! The amount may not be enough, but definitely, it is better than not saving at all. The best part, we are started at an early age.
Days after the seminar, we called up the Sun Life Agents who happens to be the parents of our officemate in our previous company. We were presented different options. So we decided to limit our coverage to what we believe is adequate. We got a plan called Sun Flexilink, the VUL product of Sun Life and decided to go for a Balanced Fund (med-high risk).
The biggest factor in our decision on how much coverage to take is our budget. We do not want to fuse all of our investment in one basket, and we do not want to spend so much on insurance. We just thought of what we think is sufficient for future use, and how much we can allocate for that. In addition, we included benefits that can provide financial assistance in case we have serious illness. This is a great add-on benefit since you’ll be covered when you’re faced with a critical illness listed in the policy. We just felt the need to be prepared because after all, who knows when and who the unwelcome diseases like cancer wants to strike on. A year’s savings won’t be enough to cover the hospital bills. Even your healthcare coverage in the company is limited.
In summary, our needs for protection, funds for critical illness and other needs for future funds are addressed. These are the benefits of having the product we chose.
I am now a Sun Life agent, with the goal of helping people realize the need for financial wellness. If you want further explanation, feel free to drop your comments. I’ll try my best to assist you.
